Murder of Emmitt Till
In 1955, Emmitt Till was a little black boy who was out and about and came across a white women. He was whistleing and she took affence to him whistling since he is black. The family took the boy's whistling as an insult and went after him. Two white men were furious with this boy went out and searched for him. He then went and kidnapped him and beat him. He was then murdered and dumped in the Tallahatchie River near Money, Mississippi. He was shot in the head by these men too. This can be considered lynching all because of a boy whistling towards a white women. His crime was labeled "Emmett's crime: talking and maybe even whistling to a white woman at a local grocery store".
Soon these men were accused of manslaughter and kidnapping of Emmitt Till. They were brought up to an all white court jury and was announced innocent. This became a large impact to the black community and was soon became a big impact toward the civil rights movement. White people in the North were as shocked as blacks at the cruelty of the killing. Roy Bryant, whose wife Carolyn was the white woman at the store, and his half brother, J.W. Milam, were tried for Emmett's murder and acquitted by a jury of 12 white men. Its sad how his murder is one of thousands in the south during the civil rights movement but it still impacted many poeple as other murders had.
The murder of Emmitt Till is a very important event in my opinion because of the sheer impact of the event toward the North. This 14 year old boy was murdered for whistling to a white women; this is a rediculous reaction for such a small action made my Emmitt. This women was insulted by such a little thing just because he was black? The North had almost just as a sad impact as in the present. The North was shocked and upset for such a mansluaghter of a young boy and then declared innocent in court.
