The Assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. originally was Michael Luther King, but changed his name later in his life. He came from a family of pastors who served as preachers at the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. King attended segregated schools in Georgia. At age fifteen he graduated high school and moved on to go to Morehouse College, a negro college in which his father and grandfather attended and graduated. Then he went to study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania, where he became president of a white class. He then finished his degree at Boston College. There he met his wife and brought in two sons and two daughters.
King became a pastor in Alabama. He joined an executive committee for the advancement of colored people and soon became ready to lead a nonviolent civil rights movement. He then organized a bus boycott that lasted 382 days. Later this caused Congress to declare bus segregation laws unconstitutional and let whites and blacks ride buses together. During Kings years of service to movements of civil rights, he was harassed, abused, arrested and attacked, such attacks include bombing on his home.
King was later elected president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. This conference led to Martin modeling his acts to Gandhi's. The SCLC dealt with racism with Christianity and King traveled millions of miles to speak and protest about injustices against minorities. He also wrote numerous articles and five books leading him to be noticed throughout the world. He led a protest in Alabama, planned the drives in Alabama, and led the march on Washington where he gave his famous speech, "I have a Dream". He spoke closely with President Kennedy and Johnson. He was arrested about twenty times and was also assaulted. King recieved five honorary degrees and was the youngest man to receive a noble piece prize which he turned the funds to the continuation of civil rights movements. Sadly, on his hotel balcony in Alabama, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated April 4, 1968.
